Do you paint or don’t you paint the inside of your house before you sell? It’s a question that I get asked quite a bit.
A lot of home owners have chosen paint colours for their home based on what they like, the furniture in their home and it worked beautifully for them. The colours were chosen based on how they live in their home.
But you are selling your home and this is when you have to remove yourself from the home and think of how you view a home when you are searching. When you go into a home that you think might be the one and see paint colours that are just not your style, often you walk away because you can’t image yourself in that space. You think about the amount of work you have to do to make it your own. You can’t image your furniture being in that space. I’m sure you’ve felt that way at one time or another.
A potential buyer feels that same way. The reason you don’t want to change it isn’t because you think everyone should love it, you don’t want to do the work in your own home. This is when you need to remove the emotion behind painting your home and remember, your home is now going to be viewed by people that feel the same way about painting your home. OMG, look at all of that work. They just want to move in and feel at home they day they buy it.
Here are some tips to decide if you should paint or not…
- Are the colours neutral?
- If it’s been more than a few years since you’ve painted.
- Are there marks or chips in the paint that are very visible?
- Did you create a kids room that is based on a theme?
- Is your ceiling looking dull because it hasn’t been painted in so long?
- Do you have old paneling in the basement, should it be removed and the walls painted?
- Are your bedrooms dark? Paint then in a lighter colour, they’ll look fresh and bigger.
Those were just a few tips to think about before you decide to paint or not to paint. It’s best to consult with your Real Estate Agent first or a Home Stagger.
