De-Cluttering For Better Home Style

Let's face it, most of us don't have a closet like the one in that picture. We wish we did though, so let's get the space you have a little more organized. Whether you're moving into a condo or would love your home to just be a lot less cluttered, let's get your home a lot more organized and winter is actually the perfect time for this since most of us are indoors anyway.

First things first, while you're out shopping grab some boxes at from the store or pick up them up at a store that sells boxes. You'll be creating 4 types of areas for de-cluttering.

  • Trash: This box is pretty self-explanatory and a good idea to plan your trash section close to garbage collection day.
  • Recycle: These boxes are for items that can be recycled, such as paper, cardboard, plastic or glass.
  • Relocate: This is for items that seem to have escaped the rooms they were supposed to be in.
  • Donate: This box is for items you no longer want (or need), but  another person might want or need them. Lots of local charity partners would be happy to accept household items and gently used clothing. Some charities will even come and pick them up. Search for some of these and make it easier to donate.
Clothes are one of the big ones, we tend to hang on to them longer than most other things in our home. We think we may fit into them again one day or they may come in style again any day now.

Cluttered closets are out and dedicated storage units are in! This means sticking with the items that work well with each other or you still wear them on a consistent basis. If you haven't worn it in a few years, chances are you won't be any time soon.

The first step to cleaning out your closet is removing every. single. item. See your closet space empty, it will help fuel you to keep the less is more mindset. Next, start with selecting a clothing type. Sweaters, t-shirts, denim, dress shirts, and so on. Now, hold each item up and, ask yourself three questions:

  1. Do I love it?
  2. Do I wear it?
  3. Does it fit?

If you answered “no” to any of the questions above, chances are it's time to let it go.  For many of us, closet space is at a premium, so once you've decided which items you're tossing, think about if it makes sense to donate or is it trash. For the items you're keeping, the next step is to think about which category of clothing it fits into. Save the part of your closet for everyday and workwear that is the most accessible while neatly tucking any least-used items at the end of your closet.  There are some really nice-looking bins and baskets available that are an efficient solution for storing accessories such as belts, scarves and handbags.

Receipts, papers and magazines

Does your home feel like it's drowning in paper? Your desk drawers or kitchen drawers may be crammed with old cards, bank statements and bills. There are only three categories of paper that you should not discard:

  • Need attention: such as bills to be paid or forms to be signed.
  • Are needed for short-term: like current tax documents and warranties.
  • Are needed indefinitely: for example, contracts, birth certificates and social security cards.

Any paper items that don't belong to one of the categories above should be recycled, a must to do is to shred any documents containing any personal or sensitive information.
Yes, there are a lot of us the still like a good magazine and don't want to read them online. Check the dates of some of these magazines you've been hoarding and get rid of the ones that aren't relevant any longer.
These de-cluttering tips will help to get you started to have a home that will feel more spacious and a life that feels far less confusing or disorganized.
